Photo-based methods such as photo elicitation and photo voice are arts-based participatory approaches for research that can open up different avenues of working with children and young people. These methods can be child friendly and have been shown to facilitate participation of both children and young people by actively engaging them in dynamic, creative and meaningful ways to give insight into their views, thoughts and lifeworlds. These methods can increase understandings in ways that traditional (words alone) interviews are unable to do. Part of the success of photo-based methods is because many children and young people regard these processes as fun. In this chapter we provide practical guidance for researchers who are interested in using photo-based methods in research with children and young people.
