Cholera was one of the shock diseases of the world in the nineteenth century and beyond. It was hard to differentiate from other diarrhoeal diseases and so its presence in Tasmania cannot be definietly verified, but a number of cases were reported. But the fear of cholera provoked severe quarantine restrictions so ships carrying the disease did not assist its spread. This paper looks at reported cases of cholera and the steps taken by government to prevent its appearance in Tasmania.
