Randall Forsberg was an advocate for controlling nuclear arms, founder of the Institute for Defense and Disarmament Studies (IDDS), and coauthor of the nuclear freeze proposal. Born Randall Watson in Huntsville, Alabama, she was raised in New York and studied at Barnard College before working as a teacher in Pennsylvania in the mid-1960s. In 1967, she married Gunnar Forsberg, a Swede then studying in the United States, and the couple moved to Stockholm. Forsberg secured a job as a typist at the newly founded Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a research center devoted to disarmament studies and conflict resolution. There she soon began to conduct research as she honed her interest in and passion for nuclear arms control.
