The extent to which late medieval Ireland was connected to the wider world was forcefully illustrated by the arrival of bubonic plague in summer 1348. In Kilkenny, Friar John Clyn had already heard reports of its alarming advance through Christendom and had access to continental prophecies that informed his sense of its apocalyptic significance.
