Mangrove is a forest ecosystem that dominates saline, tidal coastlines of tropical and subtropical zones. The ecosystem is of great importance for its numerous goods and services. However, mangroves are degrading at varying rates for different reasons. Although causes of mangrove destruction have been studied at local, national and regional level, cross-country analyses of the determinants of mangrove losses are lacking. In this paper, the ecological, economic, institutional and social contexts of mangrove loss have been analyzed through a cross-country analysis to reveal some important underlying causes of mangrove loss.
