In Australia currently and globally, for a number of years, the implementation of EMR (electronic medical record) systems has accelerated. While Australia is only just commencing on this necessary but arduous path, evidence from the United States, coupled with recent observations from some sites in Australia, strongly suggests that many nurses question "You Want Me to Use This EMR? Why should I use this EMR?." Their perceptions about the use and usefulness of the EMR are not highly positive initially and typically do not change and even become more negative once they start to use the implemented EMR system. To increase acceptance and adoption of the EMR, we have applied a rich theoretical lens to understand the root concerns and create solutions to increase nursing adoption.
