This series of 5 digital images, entitled 'In the Beginning', contributes to a field of art practice concerned with the visual representation of how meaning is constructed through language. It makes a particular contribution to a field of contemporary visual art practice influenced by post-structural theory as reflected in the work of artists such as Joseph Kosuth, Gonzalo Lebrija and Xu Bing. While their work challenges our relationship to language and questions its cultural authority, the exhibited series of prints is concerned with evoking and reinforcing the power, mystery and cultural significance of ‘the word’ and of language. It makes reference to Biblical ideas about creation; to classical library architecture which aimed to represent the divine; to the use of the grid as a way of ordering information, and to the alchemical imagery of early 17th century physician Robert Fludd who illustrated the process of the creation of the world as it emerged from the infinite void when the word was spoken.
