Placemats was a collaborative project between the artist and 45 Tasmanian school students representing six schools. Participants drew and cut from carpet offcuts, plans of rooms in their domestic environments. These were then swapped with others in the group, who took them home to live with, for a week. Participants photographically documented, with disposable cameras, the invasion of these ‘foreign rooms’ within their private space. The exhibition, Placemats, brought together the 50 hand-cut carpets and 1000 photographs.
