The Reading Room: Star/Dust
"Our books will bear witness for or against us, our books reflect who we are and who we have been, our books hold the share of pages granted to us from the Book of Life. By the books we call ours we will be judged." - Alberto Manguel, The Library at Night.
THE READING ROOM is an immersive, interactive environment about the magic world of books and reading. The installation will be dominated by a collection of around 15,000 books and will offer visitors a range of opportunities to read, listen and reflect on the power of the written and spoken word. Visitors will also be able to add to the READING ROOM and become part of the work – details will be published in the exhibition's Public Program, available closer to the opening.
The key idea motivating THE READING ROOM is that our identity is shaped by the books we read, and in turn, that the books we read reflect the society in which we live.
THE READING ROOM is part of Star/Dust, a year-long series of contemporary art experiences developed by three Tasmanian artists and presented with the support of Detached Cultural Organisation. It will coincide with Children’s Book Week and the City of Hobart Art Prize.
