Turkish Turnaround was influenced by 5 and 7 grouped rhythmic patterns in some traditional Turkish songs/forms. The generative drive created by these repetitive grooves are enhanced by their rhythmic subtleties and provide a focus and target point for a introductory fugal theme that also utilises the 5 grouping. The melody deliberately utilises a relaxed atonality and aspects of bitonality to create both tension and coherence. This is carried to the logical conclusion in the fluid harmonic language that provides bitonal and modal references mixed with a restrained atonality. As in much of the composer's work the harmony is derived from intentional mix of melody driven intuitive voicings and root movement combined with a deep analysis and exploration of multiple levels of substitution that are used to activate new directional opportunities. The overall emotional intent of the work with its "deconstructed" central improvised section is to evoke some of the ongoing and increased political tensions in that country.
