The scope of this study is to numerically simulate a series of rock mechanics and fracture mechanics tests using a combined finite−discrete element (FEM/DEM) code in order to investigate the crack initiation and propagation, and the fracture progressive process. The FEM/DEM is capable of accurately modelling the transition from continuum to discontinuum based on explicitly modelling fracture processes. To simulate different fracture processes, a series of intact rock disc, pre-notched disc and rock rings are simulated and the effective strength of the rock samples and fracture patterns are investigated. It is found that the employed numerical technique is well able to capture the main fracture mechanisms in rock mechanics.
