The early detection and treatment of disease is crucial to achieving better community health. Early detection relies on individuals having the knowledge, ability and motivation to regularly perform self health checks and to seek health care services when early signs and symptoms of disease are identified. Isssues affecting women’s health have been addressed with considerable success in recent times. Ford (1998) maintains, however, that men are dying from largely preventable diseases and injuries. An understanding of health knowledge and behaviour among males is essential if community health promotion activity and health education programs are to be successful.
