Since December 2010, four Australian universities have been undertaking a research project to examine the level and content of health informatics curricula in tertiary clinical health professional courses. As part of this project, all Pro-Vice Chancellors, Heads of Schools and Course Coordinators of health courses were invited to attend workshops during January-February 2012 held in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth and Melbourne. Prior to the workshops, all participants were provided with the Australian Health Informatics Education Council “Health informatics scope, careers and competencies” paper, released November 2011. There were a total of 52 participants across Australia who contributed to these workshops. As part of the workshops, participants were required to work in small groups (13 groups in total) to identify the top five items they considered essential for ehealth competence across all clinical health professions. For each of the five items chosen, participants were asked to make a poster outlining examples of important and demonstrable learning outcomes, feasible and effective teaching methods, and relevant and meaningful assessment activities. This presentation will discuss the top 10 competencies identified and the extent of these within current clinical health professional curricula. A brief discussion of other findings from this project will also be provided.
