The usefulness of carpooling has long been recognised as an effective method of transport, offering environmentally friendly transport at a high level of convenience. However, as with any social activity, carpooling comes with the risk of engaging with potentially undesirable people. Mobile technology has increasingly been used to access social networking services, and location-aware mobile social software has the potential to address the problems in carpooling; however, existing software is far from perfect and suffers from a variety of shortcomings. In an effort to address this, we present suggested remedies to these problems in the form of a framework for understanding and improving location-aware mobile social software as a whole.
