Over the last two GRDC supported projects - Australia China collaboration on barley germplasm, we have accumulated a large volume of experimental data related to various aspects of waterlogging stress in barley. These included: a series physiological studies on waterlogging tolerance; genetic studies and identification of molecular markers for waterlogging tolerance; and QTL mapping for waterlogging related physiological traits. Most importantly, reliable screening facilities were developed, which enable the accurate phenotyping thus effectively breeding for the tolerance. Further research on creating germplasm with waterlogging tolerance will also be discussed.
