The leadership field faces mounting challenges: theory proliferation, an overreliance on WEIRD samples, leader-centrism, contextual blindness, and large gaps between the theory and the realities of leadership. Would greater consensus as to leadership’s core elements – arguably relationships + influence + shared purpose + collective effort, enabled by communication and shaped by context – help advance the field? This panel brings together distinguished scholars and practitioners to explore this question, including how these elements distinguish leadership from other phenomena and could bridge divides in our fragmented field. This generative dialogue aims to establish common ground for advancing leadership scholarship and practice globally.
