Female police officers are recruited at lower rates and resign at higher rates than their male counterparts, yet their reasons for joining, staying in, or leaving policing are not well documented. This study compared reflections on career decisions by male and female Australian police officers (N = 182) who were staying in policing (n = 96), or undecided about staying (n = 57), and former police officers who had changed careers (n = 29). Responses were analysed in light of the kaleidoscope career model. Retention strategies to meet female police officers’ needs for authenticity, balance, and challenge are suggested.
