Vegetable crops are traditional staple foods in PNG. However, production and yields have declined, with adversely affecting diet and economic wellbeing, and raining long-standing concerns about adequacy of Port Moresby’s fresh food supplies. Importation of Australian rice, fruit and vegetables symbolises continuing dependence on Australia and is negative for the balance of payments.
