The conflict between in-stream and off-stream uses of rivers is explored using as an example the effect of abstraction of water from the Murray River for irrigation on the river red gum ecosystem of the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park and the Murray-Kulkyne Park. A procedure for dealing with such conflicts is put forward.
