Data science as a field of study in the primary years is nascent in nature and ill-defined. Examples of
how it differs from, and complements statistics education are needed to facilitate the delivery of
suitable learning activities that support young students to develop the skills needed to become young
statisticians capable of managing multivariate data sets. This paper reports on exploratory research
with primary students that explores the potential for statistical inquiries with a civic statistics focus
to support the development of data science skills, specifically, how to wrangle data.
