Distribution, variation, and phylogeny of saxitoxin biosynthesis genes in the dinoflagellate genus Gymnodium

The dinoflagellate <i>Gymnodinium catenatum</i> is the only gymnodinoid saxitoxin-producing dinoflagellate and, as such, is phylogenetically distant from all other saxitoxin producers that belong exclusively to the related gonyaulacoid genera <i>Alexandrium</i> and <i>Pyrodinium.</i>
