The ‘insider’ as an ensemble member negotiates complex roles in jazz performance. At once the player is required to create spontaneous musical output as an individual and as a member of a group. To this end there is a need to be a composer, a performer and perhaps an innovator. This is in conjunction with the requirement to be a negotiator, a collaborator, an analyst and a confidante.
