Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs have the potential to underpin major competitive advantages in productivity, but at potentially significant risk. To exploit AI’s productivity potential, effective AI literacy is required by all that use it. Central to the effective use of AI is the concept of the Universal Design of Learning Framework (UDLF). Using the pedagogy before technology theory, this study explores the “students as partners” approach to the teaching and learning of effective AI use. A pilot study of 200 students was conducted among undergraduate business students to see how they apply, use and critically analyse answers from ChatGpt, Gemini and Co-pilot to answer the question “Why do business strategies fail”. The results suggest that students need to further understand not only the capabilities of AI, but also it’s limitations. Incorporating a students as partners model has become central to the furthering of good learning design and the UDLF.
