This talk presents an overview of the science of the built fabric particular to condensation. It will discuss the health implications of condensation and mould, together with the lack of recourse from tenants and building owners: be it in testing, insurance claims or litigation.

Australia has taken a primarily thermal approach in the management of the building fabric. This will be shown in contrast with the need to manage hygro-thermal behaviour of materials, seen in the context of building regulations in other countries. The complexity of this phenomenon demands sophisticated analytical tools, and this discussion will explore the usefulness and limitations of some of these simulation packages.
Effective mould strategies for HVAC
Alkaline cleaners are generally selected to clean coils because they can remove the accumulated oils or greases that act as nutrients for microbial growth. The major issue with coil cleaners is that they corrode a coil’s aluminium fins and copper tubes. Residual coil cleaner not rinsed out of condensate drain pans will corrode the condensate pans, causing premature and expensive replacement. However, the most efficient and effective way to clean and sterilise coils is with ultra-violet light (UVC). Bree will explain the advantages of this technology.
