In Australia Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDSov) and Indigenous Data Governance (IDGov) are terms that have become increasingly used in both community and government contexts. The concept of IDSov has emerged from Indigenous communities internationally concerned about extractive data practices within communities and how data has been weaponised against Indigenous peoples. Indigenous peoples have sought to redress the data imbalance through IDSov and IDGov. This closed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander panel will present on this history and the key concepts of IDSov and IDGov. We will also present on the development and application of the Maiam nayri Wingara Indigenous Data Sovereignty Collective principles development process and how the principles can be operationalised in research and administrative data contexts. The presentations will be followed by a Q & A discussion.
