Industry engaged student case study writing

Case study writing by students achieves engagement for the students with industry (deepening industry knowledge and building industry networks), as well as creates opportunities for alumni and industry partners to contribute to student employability. The student crafts a Harvard-style case study per the process set out in Roberts (2012). They research a contemporary industry topic (e.g., issue, trend or product relevant to the local business environment), write a research proposal per Faff (2015), interview an industry practitioner (supervised by full-time or adjunct teaching staff) and write up a teachable case study. The Australian Business Case Network is an important resource for this activity. Academics across this Australiannetwork have enthusiastically reviewed and improved cases written to date.

The case study writing activity can be carried out as a unit level research project (e.g., final units in post graduate programs) or as a smaller course assessment component of a larger set of unit assessments. The Teaching Matters 2021| Celebrating Diversity55data is only preliminary (two cohorts) but covers an impressive range of topics: geopolitics, environmental, social andgovernance issues, start-ups in the Philippines, millennial investors, exchange traded funds and innovative quantitative portfolios. The diversity of topics, employment areas and businesses demonstrate its relevance for a wide range of disciplines. Informal follow up conversations and reviewing internet profiles show all seven case-study-writing students achieved successful and valuable occupations. Half of the students were profiled in University marketing as employability success stories. Future projects could potentially lead to published cases for internal and external class use.
