It's all about me: Understanding recreational vehicle useage (caravanning) on the Alaska Highway
The use of recreational vehicles (RVs), or caravanning as it is often referred to in Australia, is growing rapidly. RVs include caravans, fifth wheels, campers which fit onto the back of pick up (utility) vehicles or camper trailers which "pop-up". Surprisingly, there has been very little research into this rapidly growing form of tourism. This research sought to understand the motivations, behaviour and needs of RV travellers. It also compared RV'ers who travel independently with RV'ers who travel in caravan groups. The research was conducted in British Colombia, Canada, and used in-depth interviews and focus groups. It found that RVers are highly social, technologically savvy travellers who appreciate the safety of travelling in their one homes on wheels. Some differences between independents and caravan travellers were also noted.
