The high application rates of nitrogen fertilisers and animal manures used in vegetable production have the potential for significant nitrogen losses through denitrification and leaching. These losses are an economic cost to growers but also have negative environmental impacts, both through production of nitrous oxide (N2O), a greenhouse gas (GHG) and ozone depleter, and as nitrate contamination of ground and surface water.
