The shift to competency-based learning and outcomes in psychology has necessitated changes in formative and summative assessment practices. This paper considers the utility of Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations (OSCEs) in achieving competency-based assessment, and formative learning opportunities required to underpin this approach. Consideration is given to the pragmatics of implementation, pedagogy, resourcing, and fitness for purpose. A case study of OSCE implementation is also provided to contextualise the discussion.
