Phantom testing of beta probe in Western Australia
Objective: Feasibility testing of the first beta probe in Western Australia was conducted to determine the spatial resolution and sensitivity prior to clinical trials. This beta probe is designed to detect positrons during surgery at a reported higher level of sensitivity then the current high-energy gamma probe.
Methods: Following the reported methodology of Piert and colleagues (Germany), a number of phantom studies were performed to test the sensitivity/linearity, resolution and distance to source. In addition, depth testing, specific activity and level of activity testing were performed, the last of which were correlated with PET imaging. Lastly, radiation dosimetry data was collected.
Results: The phantom testing found both similar and improved results to Piert reported findings. The beta probe performed well in sensitivity and linearity testing, with a 25% decrease in sensitivity with the probe cover, compared to the 33% decrease reported by Piert. Resolution testing produced similar results and depth and specific activity studies performed well, with an increased depth for this model than that previously reported. PET imaging of phantoms correlated well with probe findings, enabling the study to determine minimum doses for future clinical studies. Radiation dosimetry findings were similar to those reported by Piert and separately by Daghighian when replicating phantom studies.
Conclusion: The differences to Piert may be explained by the use of a different probe and cover, made by IntraMedical Imaging, with results either replicated or improved. Clinical testing of the probe with breast cancer and liver lesions shall commence in 2008.
