While the doctorate was once perceived as preparation for an academic position, internationally more than half of all graduates leave the higher education sector by choice or lack of opportunity (McAlpine & Emmioğlu, 2015). Recent research exploring how post-docs navigate their professional landscape indicates that certain existing and acquired academic practices, attributes, dispositions and behaviours collectively form a type of doctoral capital that alumni can then use in the academic market place (Walker & Yoon, 2017). This panel has been assembled in response to the indicated curiosity of our AARE postgraduate student and Early Career Researcher audience, in which we will explore the post-doctoral pathway experiences of four academics, spanning early through to established and consolidated career trajectories. In extrapolating their journeys, we will then together have opportunity to make individual and shared meaning of our own and our peers potential post-PhD pathways, and attempt to make sense of today’s academic landscape for those seeking to work in Education-centric academic contexts.
