This study rethinks colonial building and architecture in the Tasman world through a case study of the sealing industry. It argues that it is necessary to contemplate Sydney, Hobart, and Launceston from the water, as port cities; to restore connections between seal hunting, capitalism, and empire-building; and to situate sealers within the “webs of empire” that encased the globe by the nineteenth century.
