Objective: To identify stakeholder perceptions of sponsored clinical trials in a publicly funded New Zealand hospital, namely (1) trial participants; (2) caregivers; (3) hospital staff; (4) researchers; 5) community; (6) government bodies and politicians; and (7) the pharmaceutical industry. Methods We gather data using focus groups, interviews and surveys and adopt a qualitative descriptive approach followed by a phenomenographical analysis. Results Each stakeholder group identifies a range of perceived benefits and costs. Conclusion The issues resolve into three layers: societal, organisational and personal. The findings feed into a comprehensive social report that may have significant policy implications.
