This lecture draws upon research carried out as the inaugural Coral Thomas Fellow at the State Library of NSW. This fellowship is quite unique: supported by a generous individual –Rob Thomas, in honour of his mother, and it seeks to encourage research into Australian history. The outcomes of this Fellowship include this lecture –an article in Meanjin magazine – coming out in the December issue! and a web resource that brings together the digitized collections formed by John Helder Wedge.
