The potential for integrative projects within the existing curriculum framework

ABSTRACT: The paper investigates the potential for integration between architectural science/ technology and other parts of the architecture curriculum. It presents the rationale behind the proposed closer integration by analysing curricula of architectural courses at several small to medium-sized schools in Australia and overseas. Objectives of technology and design studio units are compared in order to establish their shared and differentiating characteristics. Next, a proposal for integrative projects is presented. A distinction is made between integrative projects ‘embedded’ in the curriculum (deliberately and purposefully aiming at bringing different units together), as opposed to ad hoc arrangements in response to current needs as perceived by various parties. The paper concludes by pointing out the benefits as well as requirements, restrictions and limitations of the proposed model as identified by the author. Other directions and enhancement, for example, through integration with other disciplines, such as: town planning, engineering, psychology, medicine, are also indicated as a potential source of enrichment for the course content.
