Tree

Tree was originally shown in Ozolins' 2016 solo exhibition Unity held at Bett Gallery, Hobart. The show featured 22 works that explored the minimal visual aesthetics and conceptual complexity of binary code. As a result, Tree was selected to be shown in Imagine, the inaugural exhibition of the new Gippsland Art Gallery in regional Victoria. Imagine spanned five centuries of art making and included over one hundred works from a diverse range of artists with the aim of telling the story of planet earth through the sphere of human imagination. Tree was included because of its direct reference to binary code and the impact of digital technology on human thought and development. Constructed as a large scale wooden sculpture that incorporates sound, it features a giant 'zero' on one side, and a giant 'one' on the other. The sculpture hums, creaks and groans, suggesting a transformation is taking place within its very structure. The work thus implies that the digital is embedding itself within the organic world.
