There has been no previous record of volcanic activity in Tasmania during the period occupied by the deposition of the coal-bearing rocks of Permian-Triassic age. Certain layers of flinty rock inter-bedded in the New Town coal measures used to be considered to be metamorphic products from contact with the intrusive dolerite.
