An approximate geostrophic streamfunction for use in density surfaces
journal contribution
posted on 2023-05-17, 06:31 authored by McDougall, TJ, Andreas KlockerAndreas KlockerAn approximate expression is derived for the geostrophic streamfunction in approximately neutral surfaces, phi(n), namely phi(n) = 1/2 Delta p (delta) over tilde - 1/12 T-b(Theta)/rho Delta Theta(Delta p)(2) - integral(p)(0)(delta) over tilde dp'. This expression involves the specific volume anomaly 3 defined with respect to a reference point ((S) over tilde (A), (Theta) over tilde, (p) over tilde) on the surface, Delta p and Delta Theta are the differences in pressure and Conservative Temperature with respect to p and Theta, respectively, and T-b(Theta) the thermobaric coefficient. This geostrophic streamfunction is shown to be more accurate than previously available choices of geostrophic streamfunction such as the Montgomery streamfunction. Also, by writing expressions for the horizontal differences on a regular horizontal grid of a localized form of the above geostrophic streamfunction, an over-determined set of equations is developed and solved to numerically obtain a very accurate geostrophic streamfunction on an approximately neutral surface; the remaining error in this streamfunction is caused only by neutral helicity.
