In the past 20 years there has been a notable shift in how white Australia has understood its past. Following publication of histories that recalled a violent colonial frontier, Australia Day began to be called "Invasion Day"; people danced to Yothu Yindi's call for a treaty; and hundreds of thousands marched for reconciliation, signed "sorry" books and planted seas of hands.
