Viable microfossils, identical to those described as Cobricosphaeridium giganteum by McMinn (1991), were collected from surface sediments of Tuggerah Lake, New South Wales, and subjected to incubation experiments. The organism that germinated was the nauplius stage of an unidentified copepod rather than a dinoflagellate species, as previously assumed.
