Teaching and learning ship resistance and propulsion for undergraduates in maritime engineering are a continuing challenge to students’ understanding and skill development due to the many concepts and definitions needed to achieve the intended learning outcomes (ILOs). The first task of the work undertaken by the authors, in the Australian Maritime College at the University of Tasmania, was to identify the teaching content and integrate the relevant concepts and definitions for understanding and skill development. This integration was then fulfilled by design and implementation of an in-class teaching and learning activity. Based on the formative assessment of the in-class activity, it has been demonstrated that the ILOs were aligned and achieved successfully.
