Alcohol and illicit substance abuse in the workplace is a OHS and employee relations issue. While increasingly sophisticated measures have been developed to test and monitor drug use in the workplace, and despite tacit union support on the ground of OHS, the implementation of drug testing procedures remains a contentious subject. This article examines this issue from the employer and employee/trade union perspectives to gain insight into the problems associated with the implementation of drug testing in the workplace.
