Gaming regulation is a major point of contention in Australian politics. This paper analyses five key aspects of the gambling policy process in Australia. We explore the rationale that underpins plans to regulate gambling; the impact of cultural norms in promoting and implementing policy;the impact of power and interests in shaping polky; and the importance of an evidence-based approach with a focus on design and implementation. We argue that a deeper understanding of these broad influences provides a foundation for better outcomes for those negatively impacted by gambling.
