One of Australia's most gifted and devoted military officers, Major-General Sir John Gellibrand, excelled as a leader of men during and after World War One, and from 1919 made a wide-ranging contribution to the welfare of returned servicemen. In August 1933 Colonel Leslie Miltiades Mullen, who had served under Gellibrand in the 12th Battalion and had himself done distinguished work for returned soldiers, praised his former commander for 'the great amount of work that he had put into the returned soldier movement; probably he had done more in this sphere of activity than any other of the few senior officers of the AIF, his interest and his help being sustained and continuous.
