Dolomite, probably Precambrian, occurs throughout the Algonkian and Maxwell valleys. It has been silicified in several areas.
The dolomite displays only moderate dips and overlies phyllite and schist, which comprise much of the more elevated parts of the region.
The phyllite and schist were deformed at least once prior to deposition of the dolomite. Karst features occur extensively in the area, but most are no longer active. There is considerable variation in soils, from acidic peats to those associated with alkaline pans. Alkaline pans are common in the area and observations suggest that, whilst a short-term phenomenon, they may be recurring features of the landscape.
