The theme of POLAR2018, ‘Where the Poles come together’, aspired to bring together the latest science from both poles and other cryospheric regions. Themes across the full range of sciences and humanities, from ‘Astrophysics and Astronomy’, from ‘Outreach and Communications’ to ‘Technology and Engineering’, were explored by 2400 delegates who presented 1600 posters and over 1000 oral papers.Combining polar and alpine research across the sessions provided new perspectives for everyone, but a number of unifying themes also emerged from an Antarctic perspective.
