The history of Australian immigration patterns is complex (see "Regard Critique sur le Multiculturalisme Australien", p54, in this issue). Australian migration patterns have usually been described by sociologists and historians in five distinct phases: the Colonisation, the White Australia policy (1901-1945), the Assimilation period (1945-1965), the Integration era and a slow transition towards Multiculturalism (from 1965 until today). This article focuses on the successive development of these five phases.
