This paper focuses on the relationship between written text and image in Henty’s adventure novels set in India. More broadly, it argues for the significance of illustrations in novels by writers such as Henty, H. Rider Haggard, and Arthur Conan Doyle and asks whether our understanding of late-Victorian popular fiction and its key genres is flawed by the scant attention paid to the contribution of illustrators.
