The first monthly meeting of the 1897 session of the above Society was held in the Tasmanian Art Gallery on Tuesday evening, May 4, under the chairmanship of Vice-president Sir Lambert Dobson, C.J., F.L.S. There was a very large attendance, including many ladies. Includes portrait and obituary of the late Mr. James Barnard.

In 1843 the Horticultural and Botanical Society of Van Diemen's Land was founded and became the Royal Society of Van Diemen's Land for Horticulture, Botany, and the Advancement of Science in 1844.
