The final monthly meeting of the Royal Society of Tasmania for the 1887 session was held on November 21. The President, His Excellency Sir Robert Hamilton, K.C.B., occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance of Fellows and visitors, including many ladies. His Excellency was accompanied by Miss Hamilton, Miss Hervey, and Mr. H. W. B. Robinson.
Messrs. J. S. Laurie and J. F. Echlin were elected Fellows of the Society.
The Secretary read a letter from Baron Von Mueller dated "November 19, 1887 on the exploration of Mount Munro on Barren Island. There was discussion on the papers presented and Mr. J. S. Laurie read his paper "Common-sense in Education : being a brief survey of the Methods of Education and Instruction in their bearing on the Practical Requirements of Life." Includes closing address from His Excellency closing the present session of the Society

In 1843 the Horticultural and Botanical Society of Van Diemen's Land was founded and became the Royal Society of Van Diemen's Land for Horticulture, Botany, and the Advancement of Science in 1844. In 1855 its name changed to Royal Society of Tasmania for Horticulture, Botany, and the Advancement of Science. In 1911 the name was shortened to Royal Society of Tasmania..
